The IAOM is the founding governing body in the Certification of Orofacial Myology. We are the oldest and largest organization that trains, educates and certifies in orofacial myofunctional therapy.

The IAOM is the only professional organization to certify clinicians in the field of Orofacial Myology.

After an eligible professional (SLP, RDH, DDS/DMD, MD) takes 28 hour Introductory Course, he/she is eligible to apply for certification.

Why get Certified?

Certification, in any particular speciality, distinguishes the professional as obtaining a superior level of education, understanding, and competency in their area of expertise. When a professional chooses to pursue certification, it denotes a dedication to learning as much as possible in their field of choice. It allows the patient or client to more easily narrow their search when searching for the most competent professional to assure that they are receiving the highest level of education and care.

The IAOM Certification process challenges the participant with in-depth investigation into the etiologies, symptoms, treatment variances, and supportive research related to Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders. The process enhances their breadth of clinical knowledge that cannot obtained through a single course method.

have to say about the benefits of Certification…

Although it took me a full eighteen months to complete the certification from start to finish, I found it to be an invaluable process that I am so thankful that I finished. The biggest benefit to me was the greater understanding that I gained surrounding clinical concepts. I found that I became better at identifying symptoms, putting together missing ‘puzzle pieces’, and became a better clinician as a result of it. I highly recommend completing the Certification process!
Courtney Wager RDH, COM®
The COM® represents a dedication and passion for the ongoing study of myofunctional disorders. I carry this distinction proudly among my colleagues however, it has also proven to be useful when explaining my credentials to both outside referrals and insurance companies.
Fabi Moy M.A., CCC-SLP, COM®
I think ‘COM®’ demonstrates to other professionals that we cross refer to, in particular, that we achieved this level of study, commitment and interest in this area – and want to continue to learn – all in an effort to help patients to the best of our ability. Of course it only means something if we reach out and educate others on its meaning.
Shira Kirsh MS, CCC-SLP, COM®, Alliance Speech & Language Center
Initially, my quest to become certified was a means to set myself apart from others in the field of Speech Pathology. As I delved into the research and the learning processes of practical application, the science, and expansion of my understanding, I grew in my passion and desire to continue learning more. Certification was my stepping stone to a world that was previously unknown. Each and every day, I am very thankful that I embarked on the certification journey. It has expanded my understanding, my passion, and my business.
Kristie Gatto, MA, CCC-SLP, COM®
Certification changed my life!
Mary Billings MS, CCC-SLP, COM®, Billings Speech Pathology Services LLC
I pursued Certification when I was at a crossroads in my life. I had been sick and lost my eyesight. I remember thinking I need a goal. Most people seek to develop solid skills in their field. Then there comes a day when you strive for more, you want excellence. During the certification process I sought research, interviewed professionals, and developed my personal philosophy. My certification has been one of the greatest gifts I have ever given myself. I will always be grateful that I was mentored to complete this process.
Patty Fisher MA, CCC-SLP, COM®
The certification process was difficult but definitely the piece of the puzzle that gave me greater depth of understanding of orofacial myology.  The investment of time and study gave me the confidence I needed to speak with medical and dental professionals necessary for collaboration in patient care. This educational foundation impacted the quality of therapy and the overall results for my patients. The combination of these factors has given me heightened credibility, building a strong reputation in the community. Every myologist would benefit from this education.
Nancy Wehner, BSDH, RDH, COM®
Completing The certification process in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy through the IAOM gave me the opportunity to learn so much more beyond the 4 day Level 1 Course.  It gave me the tools to become a better clinician and a deeper thinker with my patients.  Had I not taken the certification examination I would have no idea how to problem solve difficult cases that have presented themselves in my private practice.
Dana Hockenbury, MA, CCC-SLP, COM®
After taking an Introductory course, I was so motivated to start practicing as an Orofacial Myologist, that I jumped right into the certification process.  I felt being certified would give me more credibility as a Registered Dental Hygienist when speaking to dentists, orthodontists as well as other specialists. The “old” certification process was painstakingly ardous….18 months!! As I was reading, researching and writing I realized this was the best learning process and at the end knew it was all well worth it.  I encourage everyone practicing OM to become certified.  It will instill a sense of pride as well as be a great learning tool.
Renee Schwyhart RDH, COM®
Oral Myology opened doors for me and answered a lot of questions I had faced in dentistry. Relapse in orthodontics, sleep disordered breathing, tongue thrust, tongue- ties, jaw issues and the list goes on. However, it was not until I got the help and support of the IAOM to pursue and explore the information that I needed to be successful that I started to believe Oral Muscle function has always been the missing link…. I became the first Certified Orofacial Myologist®

in Calgary, Alberta and I would recommend to everyone they complete their certification because it fully adds to your success. Everyday I learn something new, and everyday I know in my heart I’ve helped change someone’s life. Thank you to all those who helped me achieve what I have today.
